THE H-CORE BESTIARY by Pete Hillstrom 1 Month, 3 Weeks ago

I could have leapt for joy when I saw a book with the unmistakable wrinkled line of Pete Hillstrom sitting in my “to review” pile. H-Core Bestiary isn’t really a story per se, more of a field guide of miscellany creatures, whether real, imagined, or inspired by folklore. This was one of Hillstrom’s projects from the Art Institute Chicago in 2009 and it takes a marvelous cross-cultural tour through all manner of mythic critters. On the down side, there are a couple stray instances of typos, either wrong word choices or apostrophe usage, but the fun energy and inventive use of the format all shine through. Compared to Mondo Saga, the lines of Hillstrom seem a bit plumper here, with thicker inking backing them up. If you’ve long wondered how to deal with headless mules or what happens if you mistreat a clurichaun (and really, who hasn’t?), then this book is absolutely right for you. Grade A-.

MONDO SAGA by Pete Hillstrom 2 Days, 1 Hour ago

First impressions count for a lot in my opinion, because wisdom and experience prove to us that they’re rarely incorrect. My first impression of Mondo Saga was that it felt like a bizarre mixture of Sergio Aragones and James Stokoe. It’s got that intricate figure scale and immersive art of the former’s Groo The Wanderer, with the humor, absurdity, and sheer effort to world-build of the latter’s runaway indie hit Orc Stain. The titular saga involved the tongue-in-cheek existence of Viking warriors and workers in the realm of Southfjord, as the influx of Christianity threatens the Northmen. This description makes it sound like some high-falutin’ bit of gravitas that you’d find in Brian Wood’s Vertigo series Northlanders. Yet, it’s far from that when you realize who the protagonists are. They’re mostly a bunch of drunk surfer rednecks who jam to 80’s hair metal, screaming lyrics from various Aerosmith, Bon Jovi, and Scorpions tunes. I appreciate how Hillstrom embeds some historical notes into the narrative, such as the consumption of psychotropic substances prior to battle, like Warren Ellis showed us in the Avatar Press series Wolfskin. This will undoubtedly be one of the most memorable mini-comics I read in 2011. Grade A+.

Sequential art emphasizes the pictorial representation of a narrative. Dating back to such ancient art forms as cave paintings and Egyptian hieroglyphs, sequential art has a long history. And it has seen a vibrant resurgence in the present, spanning a spectrum that includes such modes as comic strips, cartoons, graphic novels, storyboards, Manga, children's tales and game design. This exhibit seeks to explore the range of work being produced by graphic artists currently working in the medium of sequential art.
